Expansion Joint
Pool Deck was starting to show large cracks. To aesthetically hide them and prevent further cracks in the area expansion joints were cut out.
This area was cut out so that sinking concrete could transition to level with brick steps. Thus, eliminating the tripping hazard and the stagnant water that would form in this area.
The digging process is always best done by hand. An excavator machine may dig faster, but the damage that it creates to existing turf is greater. The sidewalls also retain their integrity better. This means that risk of walls collapsing later into the pond is no longer a risk.
Adding Stone
The installation of a thick cloth underlayment and rubber underlayment is the membrane that will keep all the water in. We always make sure this part is done just tight enough so as to not have the stone puncture the rubber. The customer wanted the least amount of maintanance possible. For this reason, a mortar flagstone bed was added instead of pea gravel, river rock, or boulder bottom. This creates an easier to surface to maintain when leaves, branches, and other debris sink to the bottom. Although many system claim the pond skimmer will catch all this in the filtration system. That is inevitable, and manual cleaning will be necessary periodically.
